Growing up we spent many a weekends going to REI with my dad. Sometimes we would wander around aimlessly and sometimes we would climb the rock wall at the Denver flagship store. I even took my first rock climbing lesson at REI.
I was always somewhat confused about why my dad loved REI so much. Sure the rock wall was cool but I thought it seemed a bit over priced. Plus we were an outdoorsy family, but not that outdoorsy.
Now being my 24 year old self I understand.
As I have grown older my love for the outdoors has also grown. The short day hikes have turned into week long escapades. My needs in terms of recreational equipment have also changed. I find myself constantly needing things for each new adventure.
My need for more recreational equipment is not the only reason why I love REI so much. There are many reasons why every outdoor lover should be an REI Co-op member.
5 Reasons Why you Should be an REI Co-op member
1. You get dividends at the end of the year on all REI purchases
At 10% back, if you spend $200 at REI the membership has already paid for itself
2. You can climb the rock wall for $5 instead of $20
Note: not all REI’s have a rock wall.
3. REI garage sales
This is my absolute favorite perk! Every month or so all the REI gear that has been returned goes to the garage sale. My brother has gotten $100 sleeping pads for $5 and I got my hiking boots for $50 at the garage sale that I absolutely adore. Just remember to get there early because the garage sales are done on a lottery system. I could do a whole post on the REI garage sales and probably will.
4. REI gift card rewards
REI frequently does promos where REI members get gift cards with a purchase.
5. Special pricing on rentals and classes
I have yet to take advantage of this perk but it’s something worth looking into.
On top of all these perks I love REI because they stand behind their products 100%. If you try something out and don’t like it then you can return it and they will give you a full refund.

Cara
