Memorial Day Weekend: Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park

I can recall being five years old, driving up to the mountains and visiting the site where my grandpa planned to build a cabin. From then on the little town of Allens Park CO, right outside of Estes Park, has been like a second home to me. We were lucky enough to have built the cabin directly across from a trail head that leads into Rocky Mountain National Park.

Today Estes Park is so busy with people visiting from all over the world that it’s hard enough to find a parking spot on the weekends, let alone be able to hike without having to share the trails with a million other people. That’s why I love having a trial head so close by. The trail head has access to many routes that lead to waterfalls, lakes and breathtaking views.

Over Memorial Day weekend it has always been a tradition for my family to go up to the cabin and this Memorial Day weekend was no different. Of course we hiked and barbecued, but I also spent a lot of time in my hammock, reading under a canopy of aspen tees.

My favorite hike of the weekend was up to Ouzel lake and waterfall. The hike was about 12 miles round trip and left me eager to hike even more in the coming months. For those of you who haven’t been up to the Rocky Mountain National Park, I strongly encourage you to do so. I firmly believe that it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Also, if you would like more information on how to access the Allens park trail head feel free to contact me via email or by commenting on this post.

Sincerely,

Cara
